Imperial castle
Medieval walls
Albrecht Dürer
Do you know the moment when the walls of Nuremberg's old town come into view and everything feels right again? Bavaria's second city and the largest in Franconia has kept its medieval walls almost intact, and for many people who grew up here that ring of stone is the first thing that says home.
Nuremberg sits on the Pegnitz, which runs straight through the old town, and has grown together with Fürth, Erlangen and Schwabach into one continuous urban area. Above it all rises the Kaiserburg, the castle around which the city first developed, and below it the Frauenkirche and the old Heilig-Geist-Spital. This was the city of Albrecht Dürer, whose memorial stands in the old town, and of publishers, inventors and imperial diets. In the twentieth century it also became the site of the Nazi rallies and the trials that followed the war, a past that the former rally grounds, with the Kongresshalle, still keep in view.
If Nuremberg is your city, you know the old streets, the river and the castle above them. Put them on and take them wherever life takes you.
