Giant's kettles
At Kattilamäen hiidenkirnut, the giant's kettles worn into the rock of Kattilamäki, Nurmijärvi shows a wilder side than its commuter reputation suggests. The municipality lies north of Helsinki between Espoo, Vantaa, Tuusula, Hyvinkää and Vihti, a patchwork of fields and forest with the rapids at Myllykoski and the hill of Pitkämäki in between.
Nurmijärvi has no single centre. It is the most populous municipality in Finland without town status, and its people live spread between Klaukkala in the south, the old church village, Rajamäki in the north and little Röykkä to the north-west. The name means "lawn lake", after a lake that was drained in the early twentieth century and is now flat fields near the village centre. Farming still shapes the landscape, with almost a third of the land under the plough. The author Aleksis Kivi was born here, which is why seven golden-haired heads fill the coat of arms, and Aleksis Kiven patsas and Aleksis Kiven puisto keep his memory close.
Whichever village you call home, the map shows you the whole of it: fields where a lake once lay, and the roads that tie it all together.
