About Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki

Known for

Modlin Fortress

Known for

Narew and Vistula

Known for

Modlin Airport

Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki is best known for Modlin Fortress, one of the largest fortresses in Poland, and for Warsaw Modlin Airport, both within the town. It stands where the Narew flows into the Vistula, a meeting of rivers that made it a trading town in the Middle Ages and a prize for every army that came this way.

The Brama Ostrołęcka and the Brama gen. Jana Henryka Dąbrowskiego lead into Modlin, the district created when the old village joined the growing town. Inside are ruins of defences designed by Napoleon Bonaparte and the Tsarist Blocks, built for soldiers of the Russian army and still lived in as private flats today. The Stary Spichlerz is another local landmark, and the Kościół pw. Świętego Michała Archanioła belongs to the older town across the Narew, where Stanisław Poniatowski once set up a cloth factory. The war left deep wounds here too: most of the town's large Jewish community was murdered during the German occupation.

If your days were split between the fortress walls, the riverbanks and the planes overhead, wear this map as a small marker of where you come from. Nobody else's town looks quite like yours.
