Antonelli's dome
Roman street plan
Rice fields
Novara is known first of all for its dome: Alessandro Antonelli's cupola on the Basilica di San Gaudenzio, 121 metres high and the emblem of the city. Beneath it lies a town the Romans founded around 89 BC, whose name joins Nov, meaning new, with Aria, the Gauls' name for the land around it.
The Castello Visconteo - Sforzesco di Novara recalls the centuries when the city was practically a Milanese dominion, first of the Visconti and then of the Sforza. Before that came destruction by Magnus Maximus, raids by Radagaisus and Attila, a Lombard duchy and a seat in the Lombard League; afterwards, the Battle of Novara, the House of Savoy and a spell as capital of Napoleon's Department of the Agogna. The Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta and the Palazzo e Arengo del Broletto stand in a centre whose perpendicular streets still follow the Roman plan.
Today it is the second city of Piedmont, a crossroads between Turin, Milan, Genoa and Switzerland, surrounded by rice fields. And above every roofline in the old centre, Antonelli's dome.
