Lake Heddalsvatnet

Known for

Warm summers

Notodden sits at the northern end of the lake Heddalsvatnet, where the river Tinnelva runs in, with the villages of Heddal and Yli just to the west and the town of Kongsberg further east. Being low-lying and inland, it is one of the warmest places in Norway in summer, though its winters are cold.

Lysbueovnen is a reminder of why the town grew: Norsk Hydro built its plant on the lake shore, and the old industrial district still lies along the water. Telemark Kunstmuseum - Verdensarvsenteret, the World Heritage Centre, tells the story of that heritage, while Bok & Blueshuset brings books and blues into the centre. Close to town, Semsøyene naturreservat protects a stretch of nature on the lake.

The E134 runs straight through from east to west, past Notodden Church, and on a hot summer afternoon the lake at the end of the street is the picture that stays with you.
