Tierpark Nordhorn
Down by the harbour in Nordhorn stands the Tuter, a bronze memorial placed there in the 1970s to the origins of inland shipping. One theory holds that boatmen on the Vechte used horns to call to each other in the fog, and that the town took its name from them.
There is a feeling of calm water about the whole place. The Vechte winds through it and widens into the Vechtesee, three canals cross the district, and the Dutch border is right on the doorstep, so a bike ride can take you into the Netherlands before you notice. As the seat of Grafschaft Bentheim, Nordhorn is a busy town, yet it never feels rushed. The Povelturm, the Alte Weberei and the Schiffahrts-Museum Nordhorn keep the past within reach, and the Tierpark Nordhorn is a weekend ritual for many families.
It all comes back to the river: a summer evening by the Vechtesee, a boat drifting past, and the low skyline of Nordhorn across the water.
