Nordfjordeid sits on a narrow neck of land between Hornindalsvatnet, the deepest lake in Europe, and the head of the Eidsfjorden. The river Eidselva runs right through the valley from one to the other.

That position has made it a meeting place for a very long time. In the Viking Age the farm of Myklebust was the seat of power for the Kingdom of Firda, and the burnt remains of the Myklebust ship, the largest Viking ship ever found, were dug up there. A full-scale replica now stands in Sagastad. Ekserserplassen, Norway's oldest military parade ground, lies here too, and the wooden houses of Eidsgata and Tverrgata grew up from the middle of the nineteenth century. Today the E39 and National Road 15 cross here, cruise ships call at the port, and Nordfjordeid is the regional capital of Nordfjord, home to Nordfjord Hospital and Operahuset Nordfjord.

If you have danced at Malakoff, walked Eidsgata on a Saturday or stood before the ship at Sagastad, this is a map of your Nordfjord.
