About Nocera Inferiore

Known for

Castello del Parco

Known for

Monte Albino

Known for

Ancient Nuceria

Nocera Inferiore is known as the capital of the Agro nocerino-sarnese, the valley east of Vesuvius, and it sits at the foot of Monte Albino with Nocera Superiore just to the east. The two towns shared one history until 1851; the ancient city of Nuceria Alfaterna lay nearby, and Cicero counted Nocera among the leading cities of Campania.

The Castello del Parco crowns the hill of Sant'Andrea. Founded in the ninth century, it was destroyed by the troops of Roger II in 1138; Helena, widow of Manfred of Sicily, was held prisoner and died there, Pope Urban VI was besieged inside it in 1385, and Dante and Boccaccio were among its guests. Below it the town has grown into a busy local centre with a court, a hospital and schools, two motorway exits and two railway lines. The Necropoli di Pareti and the Museo Archeologico Provinciale dell'Agro Nocerino keep the far older past in view, and the city's coat of arms still shows a walnut tree with golden fruit.

If you grew up beneath Monte Albino, with the castle on its hill as your skyline, wear this one for home.
