45th parallel

Known for

Sangone river

Ever stood on the line exactly halfway between the North Pole and the Equator? In Nichelino you can: the 45th parallel runs straight through the town. It sits at Turin's southern edge, separated from the city by the Sangone, and spent centuries as a hamlet of neighbouring Moncalieri before it became a fief of its own in 1694.

The Castello di Nichelino is where that story turns: buying it was the Occelli family's first recorded tie to the place, and Count Niccolò Manfredo Occelli paid ten thousand lire for a title that came with hunting and fishing rights on the Sangone. Later came the first train on the Turin to Pinerolo line in 1854, the growth of the twentieth century and, in 2000, the status of city. On the western edge stands the Palazzina di caccia di Stupinigi, the Savoy hunting lodge by Filippo Juvarra that belongs to a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Mausoleo della Bela Rosin is another local landmark.

Whether your evenings ended at the Parco Sangone or the Parco Miraflores (Boschetto), this map is your own corner of Piedmont, river and all.
