Hambach Festival

Known for

Palatinate wine

Neustadt an der Weinstraße sits where the Haardt, the eastern edge of the Palatinate Forest, meets the western rim of the Upper Rhine Plain, right in the middle of the Palatinate wine region, with the Speyerbach running through town from west to east. For the locals, the Naischdadter, home has always meant vines: this is one of the centres of German winegrowing and the host of the German Wine Harvest Festival.

The town reaches deep into the Palatinate Forest in the west, with valleys such as the Finstertal and the Hellertal, while its south-east lies out in the open Gäu. In between are villages like Gimmeldingen, Hambach, Haardt, Mußbach and Duttweiler, incorporated in 1969 and 1974, and Winzingen, first recorded in 774 and far older than the new town founded beside it. Above it all stands the Hambacher Schloss, where the Hambach Festival of 1832 gave the German democratic movement a stage.

If you have ever stood at the Nollenkopf and picked out your own street among the vineyards below, you will want that view with you wherever you go.
