Roman Novaesium
Schützenfest
Rhine harbour
Roman soldiers founded Neuss in 16 BC as a fort called Novaesium, where the Erft meets the Rhine, and the city shares with Trier the title of Germany's oldest. In 1984 it celebrated two thousand years since its founding.
The Quirinus-Münster carries the name of Saint Quirinus, whose relics were brought here in the 10th century and drew pilgrims from far beyond the Holy Roman Empire. The town's finest hour came in 1474–75, when it held out for nearly a year against the siege of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, and was rewarded by the emperor with the right to mint coins and carry the imperial eagle in its arms. Walk the centre and you pass the Obertor and the Blutturm; the Clemens Sels Museum Neuss and the Rheinisches Schützenmuseum Neuss fill in the rest.
If you have marched in, cheered at or simply stood at the kerb for the Neusser Bürger-Schützenfest, you know exactly which streets on this map matter.
