riverside guinguettes

Did you know that Neuilly-sur-Marne first appears in a Latin charter as Nobiliacum, a name that comes from the word for newly cleared land? For centuries it was a riverside place a short way east of Paris, and in 1892 a third of its territory was split off to become Neuilly-Plaisance next door.

What makes it unusual for a suburb so close to the capital is that no Métro, RER or suburban train station lies within its borders; the nearest, on RER line A, is over the boundary in Neuilly-Plaisance. The town looks to its river instead. The Marne and the Chelles canal border it to the south, and the lakes of the Parc départemental de la Haute-Île stretch along the water. Guinguettes once drew Parisians to these banks, until pollution brought a ban on swimming in the 1970s; from the summer of 2026, bathing spots have opened again. On the edge of the Avron plateau, the Mémorial de la bataille d'Avron (1871) recalls a darker chapter, and the Church of Saint Baudilus is the monument every resident knows.

Whichever way you come back, by the river or over the plateau, Neuilly-sur-Marne feels like home the moment the Marne comes into view.
