Jæren farmland
Jærmuseet
Olav Trygvason
Nærbø sits in the open farmland of Jæren, about halfway between the town of Bryne and the village of Varhaug, south of Stavanger, with County Road 44 passing to the west. It is the largest village in Hå Municipality, and was once the centre of a municipality of its own.
Jærmuseet / Vitengarden, by the village, tells the story of farming on Jæren, and that story is still everyday life here. The land around Nærbø is among the most important farming country in Norway, sometimes called its breadbasket, and much of the local industry serves agriculture. Commuter trains on the Jæren Line stop at Nærbø Station, and Nærbøparken is the village park. History runs deep: Olav Trygvason was born at Obrestad just outside the village, Erik the Red at Øksnevad to the north, and along the river Hååna archaeologists have found traces of Stone Age hunters and fishers. During the war, much of the Jæren shoreline was lined with mines.
For anyone who grew up between Jærmuseet, Nærbøparken and the old fort at Hanaberget, this is a map worth wearing.
