Archipelago

Across the bay of Naantalinaukko, the old convent church still stands above the rooftops of Naantali, as it has since Brigittine nuns made this one of the oldest towns in Finland. The town lies just west of Turku, and most of its land is on islands covered in forest and farmland, while most of its people live on the mainland. Merimasku, Rymättylä and Velkua joined it, so the map runs far out into the archipelago.

Kultarannan puutarha, the garden of the President's summer residence at Kultaranta on Luonnonmaa, is one of the town's best-known sights. The sea has shaped Naantali's fortunes in other ways too: a spa opened at Kalevanniemi and made it a holiday town, and Kaivohuone, a restaurant from the spa's early days, still serves guests. The stockings first knitted in the convent kept the town going for centuries and sold as far as Stockholm and St Petersburg; Naantalin museo - Hiilola keeps that past, and for younger visitors there is Muumimaailman paloasema.

Growing up in Naantali means summer evenings by the bay, the walk from the convent church down to the water and islands starting just beyond the town, and all of it is here on the map.
