Three Emperors' Corner
Przemsza rivers
Silesian history
Mysłowice is best known for the Trójkąt Trzech Cesarzy, the Three Emperors' Corner, where after the founding of the German Empire the borders of the Austrian, German and Russian empires met beside the waters of the Przemsza. Few towns can say that three empires once faced each other from their own riverbanks.
What makes the place unusual is how many layers it holds. It ranks among the oldest towns in Upper Silesia, grew up on the trading route from Wrocław to Kraków and sits right on the old line between Upper Silesia and Lesser Poland. In the plebiscite after the First World War the town itself voted to stay with Germany, while the surrounding villages that are now its districts chose Poland by an overwhelming majority. Today Katowice is next door and everyday life spills across the whole conurbation, with breathing space in Park Bolina or along Park Schöna nad Czarną Przemszą. The town also keeps the Centralne Muzeum Pożarnictwa, the central museum of Polish firefighting.
Put the Trójkąt Trzech Cesarzy on your chest and you carry a whole chapter of European history in a single riverside corner.
