Mysen stands on the land of an old farm of the same name, in the middle of Indre Østfold, with Eidsberg and Hærland around it and buses running all the way to Töcksfors in Sweden. The name is earthy: mosi for bog, vin for meadow.
What makes Mysen unusual is how it grew. It was a railway town, built up around the station on the Østre linje, and for a time it was a municipality of its own, the second smallest in Norway, with only Grip smaller. Anton Hamil Mysen, owner of the northern farm, drove the building of the station town and paid for Mysen Church. The war left a darker mark: a Nazi concentration camp stood at Mysen. Later, the Red Cross fair Momarkedet drew crowds for many years, and the old Trollull mill now holds the county museums' stores as Trollull fellesmagasin.
Folkenborg Museum keeps the district's past, and Høytorp fort watches over the town from the east, a fine thing to carry with you if you know the walk up.
