Convention of Moss
Jeløy peninsula
Moss Ironworks
Moss sits on the coast where the Mosse-elva reaches the sea, part of it spread out across the peninsula of Jeløy, with the lake Vansjø and its island of Dillingøy to the east. People have lived along this water for thousands of years, and the Vikings knew the place as Varna.
Bytårnet rises above the centre, and from its top you can see how the town hangs together: the sound, Jeløy, the old ironworks district just north of the centre, where Moss Jernverk was founded. Bjørnåsbatteriet and Torderød Gård belong to other chapters of the story, and so does the town square, where Norwegian troops turned back an invading Swedish army. In Moss the convention was signed that ended the Dano-Norwegian kingdom, a turning point that set the town up for the growth that followed.
So much has happened in one small coastal town. Climb Bytårnet, look out over it all and you will see why people from Moss are so fond of the place.
