Water was so plentiful around Monza that the Romans never needed to build an aqueduct here. Rivers, streams and springs run through the area in a tangle, the Lambro crosses the town from north to south, and the Canale Villoresi, dug in the nineteenth century, cuts across it from west to east. Legend says the town's very name came from the river bank, where Queen Theodelinda dreamt of a dove that told her "modo" — here.

Monza lies on the Lambro a short way north-north-east of Milan, as the capital of the Province of Monza and Brianza and the largest town in Brianza, in one of the most productive corners of Europe. Daily life moves between the Duomo di Monza, the Arengario di Monza and the streets of the old centre, and then out towards the Villa Reale and the park behind it, one of the largest enclosed urban parks in Europe, with the Monza Circuit tucked inside.

If you have spent your Sundays walking that park, or heard the Italian Grand Prix roar through the trees, you already know which map belongs on your shirt.
