historic medical school
pedestrian old town
A few kilometres inland from the Mediterranean, on the old road that linked Spain with Italy, Montpellier grew from two medieval hamlets into one of the liveliest cities in southern France.
The Porte du Peyrou - Arc de Triomphe opens onto a long promenade at the top of the historic centre, where people gather at sunset. From there the streets drop into a maze of pedestrian lanes, one of the largest car-free areas in Europe, full of cafés, students and the noise of everyday life. Students make up close to a quarter of the population, and the university's medical school is the oldest still working anywhere. Life slows down around the Fontaine des Trois Grâces, while the Jardin des Plantes offers shade on hot afternoons.
Whoever has lived here knows that warm evening air in the old centre, and the feeling of slipping back into it as if you had never left.
