About Montesilvano

Known for

Adriatic seafront

Known for

Medieval Colle

Known for

Seaside resort

Montesilvano runs along the Adriatic immediately north of Pescara, so closely joined to it that the two form one built-up area, with the mouth of the Saline river just to the north. The town traces an L between the flat seafront and the southern side of the Saline valley, wrapped around the hill where it all began.

What sets it apart is that it is really two places. Montesilvano Marina is the seaside resort and the modern centre, with the town hall, the beach and the long seafront; Montesilvano Colle, up on the hill, is the original medieval citadel. The name comes from Silvanus, an ancient god of the woods, and in Roman times the local salt pans sent their salt to Rome. Today daily life spreads across green spaces such as the Parco Le Vele and the Parco degli Ulivi, families head to the Gigiotto Park, and the Museo del Treno draws anyone who loves railways. Dean Martin's father came from here, and Franco Marini was a senator for the town.

In the evening, the old Colle sits quietly on its hill while the lights come on along the Marina below.
