Coal mining past

Moers is known as the hub of the Lower Rhine, a city on the western bank of the river, close to Duisburg, where the flat farmland of the Rhine plain meets the western edge of the Ruhr.

What sets Moers apart is a history that looks west as much as east. For centuries it was its own small county within the Holy Roman Empire, and during the Eighty Years' War it changed hands between Spanish and Dutch troops until Maurice of Orange took it. The House of Orange held it until the death of William III, when it passed to the King of Prussia and the Dutch garrison was sent home. Older Dutch names for the town, Murse and Meurs, still recall that time. Then came coal: the Rheinpreussen mine and its synthetic oil plant, and spoil heaps that now form the highest ground in town. Moers has produced racing drivers, hockey players and the comedian Hanns Dieter Hüsch, and its volleyball club once won the Bundesliga.

So if Moers is your town, head up to the Halde Rheinpreußen or Das Geleucht one evening, look out over the Lower Rhine, and take that view with you wherever you go.
