Ferrari and Maserati
Balsamic vinegar
Luciano Pavarotti
Do you know Modena by its engines, its vinegar or its voices? The city gave the world Ferrari and Maserati, balsamic vinegar and the tenor Luciano Pavarotti, and most Modenesi would say all three belong together. Daily life still turns around the Piazza Grande, the cathedral and the Torre della Ghirlandina, together a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and around the Mercato Coperto Albinelli, where people do their shopping.
Ask locals what they remember and it is often the small things: winter fog so thick you lose the end of the street; the two rivers, the Secchia and the Panaro, running past the city rather than through it; the Fontana dei Due Fiumi in Largo Garibaldi that honours them. The Palazzo Ducale, once the seat of the Este dukes, now trains the officers of the Military Academy, and the Museo Enzo Ferrari celebrates the man from Modena whose name became a legend. Under the streets, the canals of the old city still run, and the Parco archeologico di Mutina recalls the Roman colony.
If Modena is where you grew up, or where you came to study at its old university, wear it the way the Modenesi do everything: calmly, and with very good taste.
