The name has nothing to do with the Belarusian capital: Mińsk comes from the Mienia river, itself from an old verb meaning 'to shine', and the adjective 'Mazowiecki' – Masovian – was added in 1916 to tell the two apart. The town was granted its charter on 29 May 1421 by Duke Janusz I of Warsaw, and its present parish church was opened in 1629.
Mińsk lies in the east of the Masovian Voivodeship, 38 kilometres from the centre of Warsaw, and that position has shaped its history. Two battles of the November Uprising were fought here in 1831, the railway arrived in 1866, and in August 1920, during the Polish–Soviet War, Marshal Józef Piłsudski stayed in the town. The Muzeum Ziemi Mińskiej keeps the town's story, and the Muzeum VII Pułku Ułanów Lubelskich is devoted to the 7th Lublin Uhlan Regiment.
The Plac Stary Rynek is where Mińsk began six centuries ago and where it still gathers. Put that square at the centre of the map, as it sits at the centre of the town's history, and the shirt tells the story on its own.
