Wisłoka valley
The Samolot An-2 on display suits Mielec well. The city's motto is Here wings spread!, and it has an airport, a special economic zone called Euro-Park Mielec and a long list of technical schools and colleges that feed the industries around them.
Mielec lies in the valley of the Wisłoka, in the Sandomierz Basin of south-eastern Poland, and is the seat of Mielec County. The A4 motorway runs some way to the south, and to the north a terminal moves cargo between broad- and standard-gauge railways. The town itself goes back to a papal bull of the thirteenth century; the Mielecki family founded it as a town, and after a fire destroyed three quarters of it, the market square was rebuilt with brick houses. Around the centre stand the Bazylika pw. Świętego Mateusza Apostoła i Ewangelisty and the Muzeum Regionalne w Mielcu, and Stal Mielec, twice national football champions, fills the stadium.
Come back after years away, and the Wisłoka, the basilica and the roar from the stands will still tell you you are home.
