Menden sits at the northern end of the Sauerland, where the Hönne runs north to meet the Ruhr, and the town carries the river in its nickname: Hönnestadt. Its official name keeps the Sauerland in brackets for good reason, since there are other Mendens and people mixed them up for centuries.
The Burgruine Rodenberg, the ruin of an old castle, stands in the woods, and the Westfälisches Karnevalsmuseum shows that the town knows how to celebrate. The old centre keeps three defensive towers and part of the medieval wall, along with the St.-Vincenz-Kirche, the biggest church in Menden. Industry came early: needle-making from 1695, later limestone and cement, and the town now has three theatres, the Theater am Ziegelbrand among them.
Driving back up through the Hönnetal, between the limestone cliffs the river has carved, is how you know you are nearly home.
