Malaspina castle
Marina di Massa
From Piazza degli Aranci, with the Renaissance Palazzo Ducale on one side, look up and you see the Castello Malaspina di Massa watching over the town from its hill. That view sums up Massa: a former ducal capital, still proud of it.
The town sits where the Frigido valley opens out, at the foot of the Alpi Apuane and only a few kilometres from the sea. Behind it the mountains rise steeply, scattered with hamlets and quarries; in front lies the plain and the beaches of Marina di Massa. From the fifteenth to the nineteenth century the Malaspina and Cybo-Malaspina families ruled the independent duchy of Massa and Carrara from here, and together with Carrara the town is still known for marble. It was also the first place in Europe on record where a magnetic compass was used to map mines. Everyday life moves between the centre, the Duomo di Massa and the coast, with the Monte Brugiana as a green backdrop.
The detail locals know best is the light on the Apuan peaks above the castle walls, pale as the marble cut from them.
