Étang de Berre
Martigues sits where the Étang de Berre narrows into the Canal de Caronte, the channel that carries its waters out to the Mediterranean, north-west of Marseille. The town grew up on both banks and on an island in between, and the sea is never far away: the commune reaches south to the Côte Bleue, to the village of Carro and the small coves along the coast.
What makes it unlike anywhere else in Provence is the water running through its streets. Canals, quays and bridges earned it the nickname 'the Venice of Provence', and they tie together its three districts, Ferrières, l'Île and Jonquières. The history runs deep: the town was founded in 1232 by Ramon Berenguer IV, Count of Provence, the remains of the Roman camp Maritima Avaticorum lie within the commune, and the Musée Ziem and the Musée d'histoire de Martigues keep the town's memory. Even the town hall stands on former salt marshes.
For the Martégaux, the first glimpse of the bridges over the canal is all it takes to know they are back home.
