Abbey ruins

Have you ever tried to count the islands in Søndersø? The lake holds more of them than any other in Denmark, and it is the largest on Lolland. Nørresø closes in on Maribo from the north, so the town sits between water on both sides, right in the middle of the island and far from the coast, which is a rare thing for an old Danish market town. The lakes belong to the Maribo Lakes Nature Park, and in summer tourist boats nose out among the small islands.

There is a calm to Maribo that comes from that water and from the town's age. It grew up around a Bridgettine abbey, and the ruins of Maribo Kloster still lie beside Maribo Domkirke, the old abbey church that became the cathedral of Lolland-Falster. Stiftsmuseet Maribo and Maribo Frilandsmuseum – De gamle Huse keep the story of the town and the farmland around it.

If you grew up between Nørresø and Søndersø, you know this map by heart before you have even looked at it closely.
