Castel Loriano
Did you know that the fields around Marcianise are still laid out on an ancient grid of near-perfect squares? The land was part of the ager campanus that circled ancient Capua, divided up and handed to veterans, and Etruscan and Roman tombs have turned up all over the comune. The town's own beginnings are uncertain; for centuries it was a casale of Capua, its parishes split between Capua and Caserta.
What really sets Marcianise apart is its voice. The local dialect sounds like Neapolitan yet carries traces of French, English, Greek and Oscan — "ching" is a tile, "cstunia" a turtle. Legend holds that the crucifix in the Cathedral of St. Michael Archangel spared the town from cholera, and the fifteenth-century Castel Loriano still keeps its towers, walls and chapel. Palazzo Mondo has become a house museum. Today goldsmiths and coral workers share the plain with factories, dairies and vineyards.
Whoever comes back after a long time away knows the feeling: the flat Campanian horizon, the canals of the Regi Lagni, and the certainty of being home.
