The Gonzaga court
Three lakes
Palazzo Te
Mantua was, for a long time, an island. In the twelfth century the engineer Alberto Pitentino reshaped the Mincio so that four lakes ringed the city as a defence, and only two bridges led out to the countryside. One of those lakes was later drained, which is why Mantua today is wrapped in water on three sides: Lago Superiore, Lago di Mezzo and Lago Inferiore.
That closeness to water is what makes the city feel like nowhere else. Under the House of Gonzaga it became one of the great courts of Europe, and its streets still carry that weight: the Castello di San Giorgio, Palazzo Te, the Basilica di Sant'Andrea, the Casa del Mantegna. Monteverdi premiered L'Orfeo here, the poet Virgil was born nearby, and Legambiente once ranked it the best city in Italy for quality of life and the environment.
Anyone who grew up here knows the moment: crossing the Ponte dei Mulini or the Ponte di San Giorgio with the lakes on either side, and watching the old city rise out of the water. That is Mantua coming back into view, and it always feels like home.
