Nogat river
Seen from the far bank of the Nogat, the Zamek w Malborku seems to fill the whole view: three castles combined in one, built over nearly 230 years, the largest brick castle in the world. The town has grown up in its shadow ever since the Teutonic Knights founded the fortress in 1274 and made it the seat of their Order.
What makes Malbork unique is that a castle of this size is part of ordinary life. The Muzeum Zamkowe w Malborku fills the fortress, while the Muzeum Miasta Malborka tells the story of the town itself: a member of the Hanseatic League, a royal residence from 1457 to 1772, the home of a royal mint from 1584 and of the Commonwealth's largest arsenal. Nicolaus Copernicus visited, and Polish kings stopped here on their way to Gdańsk. The Brama Mariacka and the Brama Garncarska still mark the line of the old town walls.
Anyone who grew up here carries the same picture: brick towers above the river, and the town spread out beside them on the map.
