Chieftain Lyr
Family suburb
Lystrup takes its name from Lyr, a chieftain who worshipped the Norse gods and swore that no church would ever stand on his fields. His burial mound still lies near Lystrup Church, which went up long after him. Today the town is a suburb north of Aarhus, west of Egå and the Bay of Aarhus, and the second largest urban area in the municipality. Everyday life runs on the light rail: Lystrup Station in the centre and Hovmarken Station in the east, with trains towards Aarhus Central Station all day long.
Ask families here why they came and they talk about the children. Two schools, kindergartens and after-school centres fill the streets with young life, and Lystrup IF offers everything from football and handball to water polo and squash. There is a local library, a SuperBrugsen and a Netto, and Hedeskovparken and Æblehaven are close at hand for a walk.
Blindemandshøj, one of the old burial mounds that show people lived here long before the trams, is a reminder that this commuter town has a deeper past, and a good reason to wear it.
