Cattle show
River Lygna
Lyngdal is known for its cow. Lyngdalskua stands on a plinth outside the town hall, a nod to the farming that shaped the municipality and to the cattle show that long drew people to Alleen. The town lies on the east bank of the river Lygna, just north of the head of the Rosfjorden, with the E39 passing through.
The double name feels homely: Alleen to some, Lyngdal to others, and both are right. The avenue that gave Alleen its name was planted by the gardener Johan Gotlob Lucius, and the town grew around it into a shopping centre for its part of Agder. Nedre Lyngdalselva dyrefredningsområde protects the wildlife along the river, Klokkergården bygdetun keeps older ways in view, and Kvaviksanden waits for summer.
Coming back along the river to Alleen, with the church at the north end of town, is coming home.
