About Lüneburg

Known for

Salt trade

Known for

Hanseatic town

Known for

Leuphana University

The Alter Kran leans over the Ilmenau in the old Waterside Quarter, the harbour settlement that grew up between the market square and the river. Salt is the heart of Lüneburg's story: the town stands above a salt dome, and its brine made it one of the richest members of the Hanseatic League.

There is a warmth to the place that people miss when they leave. Brick gables line Am Sande, the tower of St. Johannis rises over the square, and Leuphana University keeps the old streets young. The Rathaus Lüneburg and the Deutsches Salzmuseum hold centuries of the town's past, and the open heathland of the Lüneburger Heide begins just beyond the edge of town.

The town grew from a hill, a bridge and a spring, and you can still trace all three on the map. For anyone from Lüneburg, coming home means stepping off the train and seeing that tower again.
