About Lubin

Known for

copper mining

Known for

free public transport

Known for

football and handball

Lubin grew up where merchant roads crossed, on the Zimnica river, and by the twelfth century it was already one of the castellanies of Silesia. For centuries it was a modest town of cloth and linen makers; then the largest copper ore deposits in Europe were discovered nearby, and the town changed beyond recognition.

What makes everyday Lubin unusual is how closely it is bound to copper. KGHM Polska Miedź, one of the world's leading producers of copper and silver, has its headquarters here, and Lubin is one of four towns in the Copper Belt, alongside Legnica, Głogów and Polkowice. Getting around costs nothing, because public transport is free. Weekends belong to the men's football side and the women's handball team, both with a proud record, or to an afternoon at the Park Linowy or the Muzeum historyczne w Lubinie. Out at the Grodzisko Stary Lubin, the town's oldest story is still written in the ground.

Even the name sounds friendly: it comes from lubić, the Polish for 'to like'. If Lubin is the town you like best – as its name says it should be – this map is for you.
