Grew up hearing the trains split at Łowicz Główny, one line heading for Poznań and the other for Łódź? Then you know this town is more than a stop on the way somewhere. Łowicz has its own bishop and a cathedral basilica despite its modest size – a legacy of the centuries when the primates of Poland lived here and, between kings, governed the country from it.
The town lies in the north-east of the Łódź Voivodeship, on a flat plain crossed by the Bzura, a tributary of the Vistula. Historically it belongs to Masovia, and the ruins of its castle stand where a wooden stronghold once guarded the marshy river crossing. Today the Muzeum w Łowiczu shows the folk art of the region, the skansen just outside town keeps traditional wooden houses, and fruit preserves and dairy from Łowicz travel far beyond Poland.
On the map you will find the Zamek w Łowiczu, the Zespół klasztorny Bernardynów and the streets between them – the ones that took you to school, to church and down to the Bzura.
