About Lörrach

Rötteln castle

Known for

Milka chocolate

Known for

Three-country border

Lörrach is known for chocolate, a border and a castle: the Milka factory is one of its large employers, Switzerland begins where the town's land ends, and the castle of Rötteln looks down on the Wiese valley. Its lords became counts of Hachberg, and the castle served as a residence of the Margraves of Baden until the troops of Louis XIV destroyed it in 1678. Lörrach itself gained market rights in 1403 and became a city only in 1682.

Locals still like to tell visitors that their town was once, for a single day, the capital of Germany. In September 1848 Gustav Struve tried to launch a revolution here; it failed and he ended up in prison, but the story stuck. Today the Dreiländermuseum Lörrach keeps the shared history of the three neighbouring countries, while the Hebelpark shares its name with the Hebel trail that crosses the town.

The region's warmth has earned it the name of the German Tuscany, and the best view is from the Tüllinger Berg, where Gutedel vines look out over Weil am Rhein, Basel and the bend of the Rhine.
