Brianza

By one national measure, no town in Lombardy is more built up than Lissone: more than two-thirds of its land is covered, which places it fifth in the whole of Italy. It lies on a gentle ridge between the Lambro and the Seveso, so close to Monza that the two run into each other, with Milan a short way south along the railway to Chiasso.

That density has a purpose. Lissone calls itself the capital of furniture, and everyday life here turns on making and selling it: the town is a commercial district in its own right, and its library devoted to furniture and interior design has no equal elsewhere in Italy. Alongside the trade sit the Museo d'Arte Contemporanea and the Villa Tittoni-Traversi, while two football clubs, AC Lissone and Pro Lissone, keep the weekends busy. Winters are cold and damp, summers humid and close.

The Torre del Palagi is the town's own mark on the map, and wearing it says you know where Brianza's furniture really comes from.
