Lingen holds a record no other German town can match: on 25 July 2019, its weather station measured the hottest temperature ever recorded in Germany. The town is also known for its energy industry, from the Emsland nuclear power plant to offshore work, and for a university campus right in the centre.
The Historisches Rathaus is where the old Lingen shows itself best. The town was first mentioned in 975 and later became the seat of its own county, changing hands between Spanish, Dutch and Prussian rulers so often that it was, for a time, the easternmost point of the Spanish Empire. The Emslandmuseum gathers that tangled past together, and the Kunsthalle Lingen and the Archimedische Schraube bring something newer to the streets.
Lingen lies mostly on the east bank of the Ems, with the Dortmund-Ems-Kanal and the wet meadows of the Emsauen close by. If you grew up here, you know the walk along the river and the summer afternoons when the heat really does feel record-breaking – and you will find all of it on this map.
