Barley rieska
Ever heard of Limmi? Local folklore says a giant of that name gave Liminka its name, and it is a fitting story for a parish that goes back to the Middle Ages. The Swedish name is Limingo, and the local table is just as distinctive: meat potatoes, barley rieska and sweet porridge were once chosen as the parish's traditional dishes.
Liminka lies south of Oulu in North Ostrobothnia, surrounded by Kempele, Lumijoki, Tyrnävä and Siikajoki among others. Its shoreline opens onto Liminganlahti, a bay known as one of the country's notable bird sanctuaries. The main Ostrobothnian railway runs straight through the church village, past a protected station building where passenger trains no longer stop, and the old church stands in the north-western corner of the village. South of the centre, the Limingan museoalue brings together the Vilho Lampi museum, devoted to the painter's work, the home museum and Aappola, a memorial home for the opera singer Abraham Ojanperä. The writer Anna-Leena Härkönen and the prime minister Juho Sunila came from here too.
For anyone who grew up in Liminka, the map brings back school trips to the museums, the Niittäjä-patsas in the centre and warm rieska on the kitchen table.
