No-tanks road signs
Lillerød is known for Mungo Park, the small but influential theatre in the town centre, named after an explorer, and for Allerød Bio, a cinema run entirely by volunteers. Daily life gathers along M D Madsensvej, the pedestrian street, and at Allerød station on the S-train's North Line, where commuters set off for Copenhagen. On the outskirts, technology firms fill the industrial zones, and the badminton club Lillerød BK has collected titles at home and in Europe.
What makes the town its own is a handful of quirks. Most people call it Allerød after the station, which was renamed so that loudspeaker announcements would not confuse it with nearby Hillerød. Only here will you find road signs forbidding tanks, a reminder that the barracks at Sjælsmark and Høvelte are close by. And woods hold the town on three sides: Store Dyrehave to the north, Tokkekøb Hegn to the east and Ravnsholt Skov to the south-east.
Out in the landscape around it, Dronningedyssen and Karen Sofies Høj mark a past far older than any station sign, and that is reason enough to wear Lillerød's streets.
