Known for

Chemical industry

Leverkusen is known for two things above all: the Bayer company and the football club that carries its name, Bayer 04 Leverkusen, German champions in the 2023/24 season. Between them they set much of the city's rhythm – the working day at the chemical sites by the Rhine, the match days that fill the weekend.

What makes the city unusual is that it was assembled rather than grown. Wiesdorf on the Rhine merged with Schlebusch, Steinbüchel and Rheindorf in 1930 under the name Carl Leverkus had given to his workers' settlement, and Opladen, Hitdorf and Bergisch Neukirchen followed in 1975. That is why Leverkusen has three town centres with their own pedestrian streets, in Wiesdorf, Schlebusch and Opladen. In between lie the Rhine meadows, the Wupper and the Dhünn, Schloss Morsbroich and the Japanischer Garten.

And then there is the Bayer-Kreuz: for a city named after a chemist and built around a factory, no landmark could be more fitting to wear.
