Whaling gunners
Sandy beaches
Summer cabins
Looking for a swim on the Oslofjord? Ask anyone in Lervik and they will point you to a beach before you finish the question. This village in Fredrikstad, northwest of the city centre, is a place of cabins and bathing spots, and every summer it fills with visitors from Oslo and Bærum.
Lervikstranda is the beach most people mean, but Ellingstranda, Solviken and Skjæløy are all close by, and Skjæløysundet is protected as a nature reserve. Out of season Lervik is a quieter suburb of Fredrikstad, counted together with Engelsviken as one urban area. It was not always about summer guests. In the last century the people here were mostly farmers and fishermen, and many of the best whaling gunners in Norway came from Lervik, a past that still ties local families to South Africa. The name means clay bay, shared with Lerwick in Shetland and Leirvík in the Faroes.
If you grew up here, the map is your summers: the walk down to Lervikstranda, the bays along the shore, and the fjord that the whalers once sailed out on.
