Leonberg sits on a spur above the Glems valley, on the lower slopes of the Engelberg, a short way west of Stuttgart. The river enters the town from the south-east, swings north-east at Eltingen, runs past the old town and carries on through the valley towards Höfingen and Ditzingen. Count Ulrich I of Württemberg chose this brow of the hill in 1248 because it was easy to defend, and the town he founded was first called Levinberch.
The country around it is varied for so small an area. To the north, Höfingen and Gebersheim belong to the farmland of the Strohgäu; to the south lies the protected Glemswald, and a corner of the Gerlinger Heide nature reserve reaches onto the town's land. Back in the centre, the Pomeranzengarten is the last terraced garden of the late Renaissance left in Germany, the picturesque market square hosts a horse market that has been held for centuries, and Schloß Leonberg and the Engelbergturm complete the picture.
Whether you grew up in Warmbronn, still cycle along the Glems or spend Sundays in the Pomeranzengarten, you know exactly where the river bends. This one is for you.
