Lemvig is known for its steep hills: few Danish towns have a road like Vesterbjerg, which climbs out of the valley through one of the country's rare hairpin bends. Everyday life here goes up and down. The old town sits low by the water, and newer streets have spread up the valley sides onto the plateau above. Lemvig Kirke stands in the middle of it all on Torvet, crowned by an onion-shaped dome, and the head office of Kystdirektoratet, the Danish coastal authority, is one of the town's big workplaces.
The town lies at the inner end of Lem Vig, a bay of Nissum Bredning on the western Limfjord, with the lake Lemvig Sø stretching away on its other side. The North Sea is close enough to matter: when westerly storms push its water into the Limfjord, a concrete seawall on the harbour protects the town. Until Agger Tange was breached in 1825, Lemvig sat on the shipping route to Thy.
Museet for Religiøs Kunst and Lemvig Museum give a wet afternoon somewhere to go. And at the edge of town the planet trail begins with a model sun in a small park, its planets set out one by one along a path far beyond the last houses.
