About Lelystad

land reclaimed from the sea

Batavia replica

Known for

capital of Flevoland

At the Bataviawerf, shipwrights built a full replica of the Batavia, in a city that did not exist a lifetime ago. Lelystad is named after Cornelis Lely, honoured by the Zuil van Lely, and it stands on the seabed of the old Zuiderzee, some three metres below sea level.

What makes Lelystad unique is that its history is so young and so well recorded. Dyke-builders lived in wooden barracks on a construction island in the middle of the IJsselmeer; in 1955 the dyke reached the mainland, and in 1967 the first residents arrived. Yet the ground beneath holds far older stories. Near Lelystad, at Swifterbant, the oldest human skeletons in Western Europe were found, and the many shipwrecks of the former sea brought the National Centre for Maritime History here, at Batavialand.

For the people who made a life on this new land, Lelystad was never just a planned town. It is the place they built together, and the place they come home to.
