City of Discoveries
Rembrandt
On the artificial mound of the Burcht van Leiden, where the Old and New Rhine meet, the first settlement of Leithon took shape, and the city has spread out around that spot ever since. Its name comes from a Germanic word for a canal, which fits a place threaded with water.
What sets Leiden apart is its appetite for knowledge. The oldest university in the Netherlands was founded here in 1575, and so many breakthroughs followed that the city adopted the motto City of Discoveries. Rembrandt was born and trained here, as were Jan Steen and Lucas van Leyden. Leiden's museums carry that curiosity forward, from the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden to Naturalis Biodiversity Centre, while the Pieterskerk stands at the old centre and De Lakenhal recalls the centuries when cloth-making made it one of the great cities of the north. The crossed keys in the coat of arms gave it another name, the Key City.
If you studied here, or simply fell for its canals and almshouse courtyards, you already know the feeling. Keep this map as your own key to the city.
