Did you know Legionowo grew out of a railway station? It began in the nineteenth century as a stop on the line north of Warsaw, became a summer resort and an army garrison, and after the First World War was renamed in honour of the Polish Legions.
The town lies a short ride north-east of central Warsaw and just south of the Zegrze Reservoir, on the railway to Gdańsk and the road to Suwałki. Forests surround it almost on every side, which is why Varsovians once came here for summer air. Daily life mixes commuter trains with quiet streets, the Muzeum Historyczne w Legionowie and its branch in Piaski, and walks in the Rezerwat Bukowiec Jabłonowski. The town even has a ballooning history to boast about.
If you grew up here, the map will bring back the station, the barracks streets and the paths into the woods, all within an easy walk.
