About Leeuwarden

Elfstedentocht

Known for

capital of Friesland

Known for

the leaning Oldehove

Have you ever stood at the start of the Elfstedentocht, or only dreamed of it? Leeuwarden, Ljouwert in West Frisian, is where the legendary Eleven Cities Tour on the ice both begins and ends, and the capital of Friesland wears that honour with quiet pride.

The Oldehove is the image everyone carries away, named after one of the three villages on terps that merged into Leeuwarden in the early ninth century. The city grew from those man-made dwelling-hills, which give the name its ending, warden. Leeuwarden became a royal residence, a European Capital of Culture in 2018 and a UNESCO City of Literature in 2019. It also has more museums than you might expect, from the Fries Museum to the Keramiekmuseum Princessehof and the Natuurmuseum Fryslân.

And then there are the statues Us Mem and Us Heit, which every Leeuwarder passes sooner or later. Put the Oldehove and Us Mem on your chest and anyone from Friesland will know exactly where you belong.
