Iron City

Lecco is the town of The Betrothed: Alessandro Manzoni set his great novel among the lake and mountains here, and Villa Manzoni and the Civico museo manzoniano keep his memory alive. It earned a second nickname too, the Iron City, for steelworks that had been active since the twelfth century and made it one of Italy's leading industrial centres after unification.

Geographically it sits at the very end of the south-eastern branch of Lake Como, the Ramo di Lecco, where the water narrows back into the River Adda. Four bridges cross the river here, the oldest being the Azzone Visconti Bridge. The Bergamo Alps rise to the north and east, between the Grigne and the Resegone, and the Valsassina opens up behind the town, ending right at its edge. In 2013 Lecco was named Alpine Town of the Year, and since then tourism built on books, sport and the outdoors has only grown.

Wear the Basilica di San Nicolò and you are wearing the spot where lake, river and mountain meet in one small city.
